Amy Thai, Ascendance, 2026
Ascendance is a marble sculpture by Amy Thal, commissioned by Lane Cove Council as a permanent public artwork for the Galuwa Recreation Centre in Lane Cove, Australia. The sculpture was unveiled during the official opening of the Galuwa Recreation Centre on Friday 6 February.
Carved entirely from one block of marble, Ascendance reflects Thai's ongoing exploration of material, transformation, and the relationship between nature's transience and permanence. Botanical forms are central to her practice, Informing the sculpture's layered, leaf-like forms, which suggest both stillness and movement.
The work reflects the ethos of the Galuwa Recreation Centre — Galuwa meaning "to climb" in the Sydney Aboriginal language - embodying Ideas of ascent, resilience, and personal growth. Installed as a permanent public artwork, Ascendance forms part of the everyday experience of a community space dedicated to movement, wellbeing,
and connection.
